Crime Prevention Ottawa Launches Neighbourbood Toolkit to Help Build Safer Neighbourhoods

(Ottawa) – Crime Prevention Ottawa (CPO) is pleased to announce the launch of its newest community resource, the Neighbourhood Toolkit. This comprehensive online resource is intended to encourage Ottawa residents to become more engaged in their communities, and to help them build safer neighbourhoods.

The Neighbourhood Toolkit will be launched on Monday, May 31st at the Kanata Leisure Centre and Wave Pool, 70 Aird Place, at 10am. Ottawa City Councillor and CPO Chair Jacques Legendre, Ottawa Police Service Chief Vern White and Steve Kanellakos, Deputy City Manager, City Operations will be in attendance.

The Toolkit encourages Ottawa residents to get involved in their neighbourhoods. Individuals, community associations, Neighbourhood Watch volunteers and many others will find helpful ideas and practical information about building safer neighbourhoods from the ground up. The Toolkit also contains information about specific problems and crimes and how to get help from municipal and community resources in Ottawa.

CPO Chair, Councillor Jacques Legendre wants Ottawa residents to understand that friendly, connected, active communities are safe communities.

“Everyone needs to get involved,” he says, “And we encourage community members to use the Toolkit to become more active in promoting crime prevention and community safety.”

CPO developed the Toolkit in partnership with the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police Service (OPS), City Councillors’ offices, community organizations and volunteers. Steve Kanellakos, Deputy City Manager, City Operations, feels the Toolkit is a good compliment to existing City initiatives like the Community Development Framework and Service Excellence: “The CPO Neighbourhood Toolkit aligns with many City initiatives in this area and is a good citizen-focused addition to our work.”

OPS Chief Vern White also sees the Toolkit playing an important role in helping the police do their job, especially as it relates to the work of the Community Police Centres who work in partnership with communities. “The police alone cannot keep communities safe,” says Chief White. “We need active, organized community partners and CPO’s Neighbourhood Toolkit will help build this capacity.”

The Neighbourhood Toolkit can be accessed online at: www.crimepreventionottawa.ca/toolkit.
